What to Look for in a Tunic
Merriam-webster Dictionary
The apparel industry has taken the word tunic from ancient Greece and has been using it in a more vague way. Tunics are long tops that sit below the bum area. They can be described as long sweaters or long shirts that cover your bum, and that’s why they look great with leggings.
Length
You want the tunic to rest below your hips and to cover your bum. Tunics can vary in length after that, from knee length to maxi. Longer tunics with no shape may make you look shorter and frumpy. Mid-thigh lengths are often the best choice for women over 60.
Fabric
Tunics are designed in a variety of fabrics, from natural woven linen to synthetic knit polyester. Tunics with some stretch tend to be more comfortable to wear.
What to Look for in Leggings
Leggings are basically tight pants that hug your entire leg. They are thicker than tights and are not see-through.
Length
Leggings come in a variety of lengths: knee-length, mid-calf-length, ankle-length, and full-length. Knee-length leggings + tunic combo creates a fresh summer look.
Fabric
Obviously, leggings need to have some stretch in order to be comfortable. They typically come in mixed fabrics with some stretch agent included – like spandex or lycra, for example.
Different leggings have different uses. Athletic leggings are used for hitting the gym or exercising. Daywear leggings can be worn out and about as a part of your casual outfit.
And What Are Jeggings!?
You may see the word jeggings when shopping and may wonder what it is. The word jeggings simply comes from the words “jeans” and “leggings” put together. Basically, they are pull-on super-stretch jeans with or without pockets. I consider them included in the leggings category and have selected some for our looks below.
Oh yes, I have also seen the word treggings. Want to take a guess? “Trousers” + “leggings” = dressier leggings.
Look for leggings that are thick enough to support your bum and thighs – fabric like Ponte is an excellent choice. More percentage of stretch does not necessarily mean more comfort. More spandex may make the legging too loose to wear decently.
